Train with kindness
I have worked with so many breeds. Many abused, or neglected to the point of abuse. I have found if you take the time to watch the horse interact with other equines, and humans, you will gain a better knowledge of his/her problems/phobias (whatever you choose to call it). I take all horses, and use gentle tequiniques. Some have been abused to the point they trust no one. Others have been neglected to the point they are almost wild again.
Example: I purchased an 8 month old filly, had not ever been touched by humans, only bullied by her barn buddies...she could not be haltered, led, touched. I herded her into the trailer, and once in there, after the 4 hr. trip home, I placed a halter on her, and we "herded" her into a stall. The next three days consisted of me going in there, and talking to her, petting her, tugging on the halter. After day 4, she came to me. In the stall, on her own, she craved attention, and thrived on it! She is now a coming 5 yr old who is completely voice trained. Patience, and a gentle touch goes a long way. I have taken world class "show" horses that were terrified to be clipped or loaded, and within days, they are fine with all of the "challenges" I throw at them. All without drugs, or twitches. I use a lot of Native American Training. My grandmother told me, in her tribe, I was called a horsewhisperer.
